Nicest comment on soprano playing: "Your playing was like sprinkling pixie dust over the band". (Randi Bulla)

Niels was born on a Sunday evening - just as the Gartnergade Corps Band, in which his father was playing, marched passed the hospital. He is a fourth generation Salvationist, and grew up in Gartnergade Corps, where he received his initial brass band training from his father: Erik Silfverberg (OF) - a well known name in The Salvation Army brass band world.

The interest in SA banding and banding history began when Niels as a child was listenening to old 78 recordings of bands like the International Staff Band, the Rosehill Band and the S.P.&S. Band. It grew with the many personal experiences as a bandmember on an everyday level, but also major experiences as playing Soprano in the Copenhagen Youth Band which took part in the 1978 International Congress, playing at the Royal Albert Hall and Wembley, being at the National School of Music at Cobham Hall and travelling with bands to the UK, USA, Russia, Germany, the Baltics, Scandinavia and more. Other special highlights for him was to play the cornet solo "Golden Slippers" in Moscow and the solo "Victory Cry!" for a packed Roskilde Cathedral accompanied by the Valby Band.

Niels has previously been leader of the Youth Band at Valby Corps, travelling Scandinavia with the band, and in charge of band music at Salvation Army national music camps.

Niels is marred to Dinah, and they have a son Marcus, who is the Bandmaster of Valby Corps Band (formerly Gartnergade) and who for 7 years also was a member of the German Staff Band, playing Solo Cornet.
